The Design Process, Step 1: Discovery Phone Call

Updated: Aug 31, 2020

What is your design process, Melissa? This is probably one of the first questions that I am asked by clients. For many, it is the first time they have ever reached out to an interior designer and it is a valid question. In my next few posts, I am going to walk y'all through what my design process is and what working with me looks like.

Step 1: The Discovery Phone Call

A client has reached out to me via messenger, social media, website, etc...

Through messaging I proceed to schedule a time to do a phone consultation or discovery phone call. I explain that this call lasts approximately 10-15 minutes long and we set a date.

During the phone call, I introduce myself and provide a bit of my background. Key details are gathered to include: clients name, email address, additional contact number, and address of the property. I also ask how it is that they came to find me or heard of my services. I try to make this conversation as stress free for the client as possible. Like a chat with your best gal pal that just happens to know a lot about design!

The potential client is then asked what services are they looking for or seeking help with which spaces. This is my favorite part because usually clients become very chatty when it comes to discussing ideas. And I love hearing the excitement in their voices over possibly getting help. From that point, we have had a moment to create a first impression and how personalities may mesh. I tell them I would like to schedule a design consultation and get them on my calendar. Which brings us to the next part of the process...so, stay tuned!
